10 Bands That Everyone Loves To Hate
7. Metallica
Metallica have fought tooth and nail to become one of the biggest metal bands in the world. Say what you want to about their more artificial tactics, but this gang of punks have come a long way from a tiny garage to some of the biggest stadiums in the world. Even though they have reached living legend status at this point, you don't get that big without some type of hate coming at you.
Then again, it's not like everything Metallica has done is necessarily perfect either. The band's material of the '80s is excellent almost without question, but from the '90s onward, it was anyone's guess whether a Metallica record would be amazing or devastating.
They may have won tons of fans with the mainstream crossover the Black Album, but the "sellout" years of Load and Reload left many fans feeling burned. Even when the band was on the brink of destruction, Lars Ulrich's decision to go after file-sharing service Napster earned him no favors with your average metalhead.
It also probably didn't help matters that the record that followed this debacle, St. Anger, is commonly referred to as one of the worst albums in metal history. Since then, Metallica have seemed to be much more in tune with their metal roots, but it's been a crazy journey to say the least.
For a band that reached the upper echelons of the music business, Metallica may have the distinction of being the most beloved and most hated band in the metal world at the same time.
