10 Bands That Everyone Loves To Hate
6. Coldplay
When Coldplay were first coming into their own, they had a lot of potential going for them. From Chris Martin's soaring vocals to the Radiohead-influenced guitar squeals from Jonny Buckland, the band's material in the early '00s saw them coming up the ranks as rock's greatest crossover act. After Viva la Vida though, things started to go a little bit sideways.
While the quality of the band's music didn't drop off immediately, many of the rock crowd had had enough of the milquetoast sound they were hearing. The songs may work in a pop context nowadays, but fans of their earlier work have felt betrayed to hear one of their favorite acts become sonically neutered.
Just picture it: you just picked up a new Coldplay record and things start sounding promising on the first track. Then you wait for the interesting part to kick in, then you wait, and wait some more, and then the album's over.
Then again, it's not like the band are bad writers, with Chris Martin still having a firm grasp on melody even on the more forgettable cuts. But at the end of the day, listeners want to hear bands who will break the rules, and as of recently, Coldplay is about as safe as they come.
