10 Bands That Just Need To Stop
9. Sepultura
Nowadays best known as the band that Max Cavalera used to be in, Sepultura were the seminal Brazilian metal band, helping to shape and bring mainstream notoriety to the fledgling Brazilian Thrash Metal scene.
In their heyday, the Cavalera-fronted mob were untouchable. The run of albums from 1989's Beneath the Remains to 1996's iconic Roots fused thrash, groove and nu metal in ways that no band had done before or since. Roots especially is a monumental affair, combining heavy, brutal down-tuned guitar riffs with traditional Brazilian percussion and folk music.
Shortly after the release of Roots, Max's stepson passed away. The domino effect thereafter caused a huge rift between Max and the rest of the band that led to him leaving to form Soulfly. He was replaced by former Outface frontman Derrick Green and the years since have not been kind.
Whilst Max has flourished as part of Soulfly, Cavalera Conspiracy, Nailbomb, Killer Be Killed, etc., Sepultura have struggled to have the same kind of impact as their earlier years. Roorback (2003) and Machine Messiah (2017) did show signs of reigniting the fire, but the fact remains that since Dante XXI in 2006, Sepultura haven't even gone Gold in their native Brazil.
