10 Bands That Never Made The Same Album

8. Gorillaz

For many '00s kids, Gorillaz was one of the first introductions to music beyond what you'd hear on kids programming. The idea of the virtual band seemed a bit cute at first, but when listening to the band's varied catalog, you start to peel back the layers of their sound.

On their debut, the band seemed to be pulling from everything from trip hop to alternative music, with soundscapes that felt as zany as the images. Rather than double down on the cartoon factor, Demon Days expanded the lore even further with songs that felt like the call of the future, with guitars being put in combat with electronic noise. Even as the band has gone on, albums like Plastic Beach and Humanz are varied assortments of genres, with one song after another going from disco to funk to dub to punk.

So how do they maintain such a varied musical style? Well...part of it comes from the fact that different musicians are on every track. Rather than being a full lineup, Gorillaz was initially created by Blur frontman Damon Albarn but has since blossomed out into one of the most free-flowing bands of all time. Though Albarn is at the helm, every unique sound comes from collaborators from Danger Mouse to Mos Def to Grace Jones to Lou Reed. As music continues to flow from the band's Song Machine series, Gorillaz are still as curious to see where their sound goes as the listener is.
