10 Bands That Only Ever Released One Good Album
2. The Pulsars - The Pulsars (1997)
The Pulsars were the brain child of Dave Trumfio. He took the lead on all aspects of the record, from writing to recording and producing; the only other person involved was his brother, who played drums.
Without the prier knowledge that this album came out in 1997, you'd be hard pressed to pin down exactly what era it was made in. At its core, this is a post-punk inspired record; laced with driving bass lines and simple guitar melodies. But there's a lot more going on. Tracks like, Technology, wear the '80s synth pop badge, proudly; with post-punk synthesiser melodies and lyrics that prophecies the prominence of technology. Tunnel Song, sounds like it could appear on a pop-punk compilation from the 2000s. Save You, changes things up again: with a horn and easy rhythm section that seems remarkably similar to what The Lumineers were doing in the early 2010s.
Their sound is incredibly refined despite all these seemingly opposing ideas. It's a tough one to wrap your head around. Dave Trumfio seemed to be drawing from sounds that preceded him but also pulling from sounds that hadn't been invented yet. Maybe he had a time machine...
Sadly this was the only full album we got from these guys.
