10 Bands That Only Ever Released One Good Album
3. Psychic - DARKSIDE (2013)
Darkside is one of the more unique side projects from renowned house DJ, Nicolas Jaar. By soliciting the guitar stylings of Dave Harrington, he produced an album that perfectly married the hypnotic allures of deep house with psychedelic guitar music. Jaar's minimalist and progressive take an ambient electronica, fused perfectly with Harrington's blues inspired licks.
The track, Heart, pulls you into a marching rhythm, which instantly initiates a head bop, whether you're conscious of it or not; before long, Harrington delivers his subtle but expertly timed guitar hooks. Paper trails is another number that contains a guitar line that's enough to make you feel as cool as Clint Eastwood strutting around the Old West. Jaar deploys his signature deep vocals throughout, delivering ambiguous lyrics, that at times are inaudible but serve to add texture.
The richness and depth of Jaar's production is were the true magic lies. The ebb and flow of textured volume, deserves only the best sound system or pair of headphones. This is an album that transport you to the dark side of space, where you float around in a cosmos of synthesiser ambience - only to be brought back to reality when Harrington rips the fretboard.
Although the band released a second album in 2021, Spiral, it failed to capture the same sense of smooth confidence as their debut.
