10 Bands That Only Have One Key Member
4. Damon Albarn - Gorillaz
As the '90s slowly drew to a close, the Britpop movement was also starting to wind down in the eyes of rock fans. Though acts like Oasis and Blur may have been fine in helping us get over the kind of melodrama that came with the grunge movement, they also had diminishing returns, and it was time to reinvent rock into something new and exciting. Damon Albarn was along for the ride though, and him and Jamie Hewlett hit on something almost too perfect for the digital age.
Though Hewlett was known primarily for his animation and artwork, Damon had the idea of combining both mediums to create Gorillaz, which became one of the first animated rock bands to see the top of the charts. Not really wanting to put out a solo project, each Gorillaz outfit feels like the result of Damon gathering all of his inspirations together in one room and seeing what comes of it, whether that means making something that's a bit more haunting like their debut or creating an artistic statement on Plastic Beach.
Since he doesn't have his name on it, Damon is also free to try different genres that he may have been afraid to tackle with Blur, sprinkling in everything from old school Britpop to trip hop, rap, jazz, new wave, and everything else in between. Each guest might bring their own personality to the track, but being a part of Gorillaz doesn't really feel like a band at this point. It's more of a state of mind.
