5. Joshua Homme - Queens of the Stone Age
As the stoner rock sounds of the '90s started ramping up, Kyuss really fit the bill for something a lot more heavy than your average rock band. Tuning down their guitars to unheard of levels, the sounds of Joshua Homme's licks were some of the gnarliest sounds that the late '90s had offered up. Homme wasn't looking to play this kind of sludgy material forever, and Queens of the Stone Age gave him the one outlet that had absolutely no limits.
In the beginnings of the band, Homme always envisioned only a few core elements of the group staying the course, as the rest of the sound was filtered out by some of his musician friends. Though there's no messing around with the debut record's Kyuss leanings, tracks on albums like Rated R and Songs for the Deaf gave Queens the real teeth that they were missing, bringing in people like Nick Oliveri and Dave Grohl behind the drums to bring some real power to the songs.
After the groundwork had been laid though, Homme had the blueprint for what he wanted every subsequent Queens project to be, with later projects like Like Clockwork featuring everyone from Julian Casablancas to Trent Reznor to Elton John. The next era of Queens that we saw on Villains may be going back to the traditional band format, but there's no questioning who's calling the shots in every version of the group.
