10 Bands Who Used Songs To 'One-Up' Rival Artists

9. Soundgarden's 'Big Dumb Sex' Mocks Hair Metal

When Soundgarden started to make a name for themselves in Seattle, the band were one of biggest hopefuls in the alternative rock scene. The only issue going against them was that the main sound of the day was still rooted in the hair metal swaggering style of the 1980's.

Though the band were known as a psychedelic mix of Zeppelin-esque rock, there was still a sense of humor to what they did. In a joke effort to combat their hair metal competition, the band released the song "Big Dumb Sex" on their sophomore release Louder Than Love.

The entire song is a satirical piece of hard rock that seems to take jabs at hair metal's more Neanderthalic approach to song lyrics. Rather than paint vivid imagery like in previous songs, Chris Cornell takes the piss out of the glam metal posers by writing a song with blatant sexual euphemisms and tongue-in-cheek advances.

Even if the whole thing was meant to be a farce, the song still holds up as a heavy slice of hard rock from the Seattle transplants. Without even knowing it, Soundgarden turned in a half-hearted joke performance that ended up rocking harder than anything most glam bands could hope to muster.
