10 Best Acoustic Metal Songs
7. Question! - System of a Down
Many nu metal fans might not want to admit that System of a Down is a bit of a one-trick pony. Even though most of these guys' songs sound the same, no one's really complaining when the quality is still great from top to bottom. However, if System were ever going to bring it down a notch, they were going to do it on their terms.
Throughout the sonic rollercoaster you got on the double album Mezmerize and Hypnotize, Question! is still one of a kind in the group's catalog. Opening with a subtle classical guitar passage, the track almost feels slightly schizophrenic from one section to the next, with one odd timed riff switching to a subtle acoustic ballad on a dime. Just when you think you've settled into the groove, the chorus will come in with an operatic section that will leave you with your mouth on the floor.
In any other band, a song like this would sound cluttered as hell, but since the song is about the separation of two lost lovers, the balance of quiet sadness and overt despair works amazingly well when bouncing off of these different styles. System may have been known for putting you through the ringer more often than not, but Question! is one of those rare moments where all of the sonic experimentation pays off in spades.
