10 Best Avenged Sevenfold Songs
8. Second Heartbeat – Waking The Fallen (2003)
Whilst still maintaining the aggression of Sounding the Seventh Trumpet, ‘Second Heartbeat’ was also a forerunner for the more melodic sound on City of Evil.
As great as Shadows’ screams are on this track, it’s the clean vocals that really standout. Indeed, the chorus is easy to sing along to and makes for a great moment in the context of a live setting.
However, even without the vocals, this song has plenty of hooks. The combination of the fast-paced, palm-muted guitars and the Rev’s pounding drums give the song a sense of momentum throughout.
The closing solo is also a delight. Though there are many great solos on Waking the Fallen, Gates delivers the best solo on the album during the final minute of ‘Second Heartbeat’.
As with ‘Coming Home’, ‘Second Heartbeat’ is not amongst the more well-known tracks from Avenged Sevenfold. Yet it’s definitely one to check out for those who enjoy both the heavy and the melodic side of the band.
