10 Best Breakup Albums Of All Time
6. Blue - Joni Mitchell
Any casual listener of Joni Mitchell's music knows that she brings to mind the carefree side of the hippy movement. In an era when peace and love reigned supreme, Mitchell's poetic words and sense of taste when putting together melodies made her the mother of the counterculture without even knowing it. Although the surface seemed fine, Joni was nursing a pretty nasty breakup in the middle of things.
Once the '70s got underway, Mitchell described her mindset of recording Blue as feeling like the cellophane on a pack of cigarettes, which really shows when you listen to the music. As much as the melodies are beautiful, you can tell that this woman is world weary, both stronger and jaded about the man that she had to let go of. There's not a whole lot of sadness of Blue though...just a ton of loneliness and apprehension that comes with facing the world again.
Even for the non poetic types, songs like River and My Old Man are still as clear as day when talking about setting up a scene in your mind. I mean, who else wants to skate away on a river just to get away from all of the stress of the world? For a regular breakup, Blue by Joni Mitchell comes packaged with a lot of questions about life. The only way you'll get the answers is after you've lived a little bit.
