10 Best British Classic Rock Bands Of All Time

6. Black Sabbath

With the music world being blasted wide open after the British Invasion, pop songs were getting much more exciting and loud. Though many bands competed for who was the loudest of them all, Black Sabbath were important for what they did with their volume.

Once the band began rehearsing next door to a movie theater, the band became intrigued by the idea of people going to watch movies just to get frightened. After going through the traditional blues of the day, guitarist Tony Iommi hit upon a new style of music when he began to write riffs to reflect the cinema shows taking place outside. Any riff from Sabbath's music has enough grit to send shivers up and down the backs of even the most level-headed music listeners.

Though Iommi is a huge part of the sound, the other members bring a different set of expertise to the table, with Geezer Butler writing the lyrics on the real life evils of the world while Bill Ward fills every record with just the right amount of atmosphere. The band had a resident madman in Ozzy Osbourne, but even other vocalists like powerhouse Ronnie James Dio have had their name enshrined in the hallowed halls of Sabbath. These odes to doom helped define heavy metal, with many young kids eager to conjure up their own musical demons.
