10 Best Classic Rock Albums Of The 1960s

4. Love - Forever Changes

A true state of the nation record, few albums can summon the sounds and sights of late ‘60s hippiedom like Forever Changes. Predominantly written by frontman Arthur Lee, this is incisive, journalistic rock, played by a group at the forefront of a moment they weren’t sure they fully believed in anymore.

Opener and all time classic “Alone Again Or” is one of the most gloriously upbeat songs ever put on wax, with its mariachi flavour and bursts of jubilant horns. The album keeps primarily to a major key, but there’s a darkness lurking beneath the surface, as the ideals of the flower power era gave way to something a little more dark.

The paranoia drips from "The Red Telephone", a song highlighting the twin sides of the time - peace and love on one hand, racism and decay on the other. Like "Andmoreagain", another album highlight, it juxtaposes dark material with a wistful, often beautiful arrangement.

Forever Changes is an album with a lot to get into, a lot of hidden depth. Love are the sound and the voice of the decade, for good and for bad.
