10 Best Classic Rock Albums Of The 1960s
3. The Beatles - Abbey Road
The last album the Beatles ever recorded (though released before Let It Be) was a concerted effort to make a record like they used to, all in the studio together. And while the band was on the edge of collapse, they came together to produce the richest album of their incomparable careers.
The album is split into two distinct halves. The first contains hits like “Something” as well as stranger songs like “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)”, one of the oddest and best songs of Lennon’s oeuvre, a seven plus minute jam based around twisting, spooky guitars and a handful of words.
The second half is the star, though. After the classic “Here Comes The Sun”, the album gives way to a suite of short songs which run into one another, creating something so progressive and inventive that it makes it all the remarkable that they were basically an R&B band six years prior.
The album’s not without its faults (“Maxwell’s Silver Hammer” is one of McCartney’s worst comedy songs in a career full of them), but on the strength of that second side alone, it’s the Beatles’ best and tightest record.
