10 Best Dave Grohl Songs (Not By Nirvana Or Foo Fighters)
6. Late! - "Throwing Needles"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqVhiqxlohYBefore there was the Dave Grohl solo album masquerading as a yet-unrecruited "band" called Foo Fighters, there was actually another album written and recorded entirely by Grohl while he was still an active member of Nirvana.
Under the pseudonym Late! (named because Dave thought it would be funny to announce at the beginning of shows, "Sorry...we're Late!"), a collection of 10 songs were released as a cassette-only album called Pocketwatch. A couple of these songs were eventually re-recorded, most notably "Friend of a Friend" (on the Foo Fighters' double-album, In Your Honor) and "Color Pictures of a Marigold" (shortened to "Marigold" and released as a b-side to Nirvana's "Heart-Shaped Box.")
The rest of Pocketwatch contains more sketches than proper songs, as Dave hadn't yet found his songwriting stride. But "Throwing Needles" distinctly bridges the gap between his days as the drummer for Scream and his leading man status in Foo Fighters. It sounds like a prequel to the underrated "Good Grief," off the Foo's eponymous debut. It's punchy and grimy, and the clear highlight of the album.
