4. Whatever People Say I Am, Thats What I'm Not - Arctic Monkeys
The Arctic Monkeys have had a lot of successful albums and it all began with Whatever People Say I Am, Thats What I'm Not. At the time of its release in 2006 the Arctic Monkeys debut album was the fastest selling album in British history. It gave the band their first number one hits and won multiple awards, from the 2006 Mercury Prize to the 2007 Brit for Best British Album.
The album itself is quintessential indie-rock with its authentic guitar band sound and lyrics you can chant along to. Its fast paced and upbeat and just an all-around great album to put you in a good mood. Some consider it to be a concept album, focusing on the nightlife of the average twenty-something year old with pretty much all of the songs depicting either nights out or relationships. It speaks to a lot of adolescents and it's one of the reasons people love it so much, we all know someone like the people described in this album.
The album is a great description of British youth culture in the 2000s and it still resonates with twenty-odd year olds today. As well as being a band that got the indie scene more recognition in the mid-2000s they were also one of the first bands to gain recognition via the internet. Fans used Myspace to talk about and listen to the Arctic Monkeys so that when this debut album was released they already had a big fanbase ready and waiting.
