10 Best Debut Rock Albums Of The 2000s
6. Remission - Mastodon
Chances are that if you've ever come across the term "sludge metal" in your time, then you've probably also seen the name Mastodon printed in close proximity.
This band from Atlanta, Georgia are easily the biggest group associated with that genre although, to be honest, that isn't much of an achievement.
It's a niche subsection, ok?
That doesn't mean that they aren't good, excellent in fact, as demonstrated by their epic debut album Remission.
Released in 2002, Remission bowled critics and fans over with its impressive new take on progressive-style metal. People were particularly impressed with Bran Dailor and his technically sound drumming.
And this was before he started singing at the same time!
The album became so popular that it got a re-release the following year, which also coincided with the music video for the song March of the Fire Ants.
Whilst Mastodon have gone on to arguably bigger and better things since Remission, this album serves as a reminder of just how good they were from the very beginning.
Their style would evolve and change over the years, but they were always capable of delivering quality.
