10 Best Debut Rock Albums Of The 2000s
2. Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not - Arctic Monkeys
Speaking of The Strokes, this is another band that definitely received one hell of a helping hand from the guys from New York City.
Hailing from Sheffield - which is not the UK's answer to New York in any way - Arctic Monkeys released their debut studio album in 2006. They gave it the title "Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not" to let everybody know that they were pretentious as hell and proud of it.
With songs drenched in hopeless romance and the most distinctive Northern accent this side of Wallace and Gromit, the Monkeys presented a collection that appealed to the lost youths that they shared an age bracket with.
Songs like Mardy Bum, When the Sun Goes Down, and I Bet That You Look Good on the Dancefloor still persist because the themes they support haven't gone away.
It might not be 2006 anymore, but teenagers still drink too much, think too much, stay out too late, and make really blatantly obvious romantic mistakes.
As long as those trends continue, this album will remain a cherished part of rock culture.
