10 Best Debut Rock Albums
1. Definitely Maybe - Oasis
While genres like pop punk were seeing major success in the mid-90's, it didn't seem to have the same weight that came from grunge. Rock's throne had yet to be claimed. It was time for something else to come to the forefront. Enter: Oasis.
Upon its release, Definitely Maybe was an instant success with songs like "Supersonic" and "Rock N Roll Star." No longer did rock music have to be alternative rock or punk rock. It could just be full-on rock and roll music without a care in the world. While some of the lyrics can seem fairly mindless on songs like "Digsy's Dinner," other tracks like "Cigarettes and Alcohol" helped speak to the working class with a certain amount of chutzpah.
Add to that the crunch of "Supersonic" and the poignancy of "Slide Away" and this record becomes an incredibly engaging listen. These songs helped show a way out of the early 90's doledrums and into a musical future full of possibilities. On this record, the Gallaghers proudly proclaim about the ability to "Live Forever." With years of hindsight now, one could safely say that these songs are poised to fulfill that promise.
