10 Best Debut Rock Albums
9. Weezer - Weezer
As grunge faded with the passing of Kurt Cobain, many rock fans were left a bit desensitized. Rock had gotten a bit too dour and the culture was in need of a little bit of levity. Then out of the air came this little blue masterpiece.
Weezer's first self-titled album launched this power pop quartet into the stratosphere overnight. With the help of the Cars' Ric Ocasek, Rivers Cuomo and co. were able to create perfect slices of pop that had just the right amount of crunch to rock out to. These songs were not afraid to make geek chic like on the loner anthem "In the Garage" or the love-sick "Buddy Holly."
As fun as this record is, it can also tug at your heartstrings when it wants to. "Say It Ain't So" is a tragic look at what alcoholism can do to a family while "Only in Dreams" features Rivers lamenting about how he will never find the girl he longs for.
In an era where everything was centered around depression and sadness, Weezer's self-titled showed us that it was okay to rock out and just have fun every once in a while.
