10 Best Debut Rock Music Albums Of The 2010s
6. Silence Yourself - Savages
You could call the band Savages the Channel Tunnel of rock music, as they unite the nations of the United Kingdom and France.
You could call them that, but please don't.
A mostly British band (with the exception of French vocalist Jehnny Beth), the all-female Savages announced themselves in a big way with their stellar first outing Silence Yourself.
In a way, there's two different albums going on here.
One is an ultra-tight instrumental album showcasing the very best bits of dirty, grimy post-punk. The other is a captivating all-vocals album with Beth wailing around like the corporeal lovechild of Siouxsie Sioux and Björk.
Rather than clashing, these two elements complement each other perfectly and offer up a listening experience that just gets more and more interesting with each play through.
Savages were recognised for their excellent opening effort with several glowing reviews and a nomination for the Mercury Prize. This put them in the same category as Arctic Monkeys, Jake Bugg, Foals, and David Bowie.
That's not bad company to have for your first try.
As Beth herself would say "tu dois écouter cet album."
Go and translate that yourself.
