10 Best Double Albums In Rock Music History
8. Daydream Nation - Sonic Youth
You have to feel a bit sorry for Sonic Youth.
Despite being absolutely huge in the 1990s, their legacy hasn't quite endured in the same fashion as their contemporaries. Although, they will live on forever as the band that stole Peter Frampton's watermelon on The Simpsons.
There's plenty of good stuff in their catalogue if you have the time, including this gem of a double release from 1988.
Daydream Nation was the band's fifth album and the one that helped solidify them as one of the bands to watch for the next decade. With its pounding sound, political themes, and devil-may-care attitude, the record helped set the stage for the alt-rock explosion that was to come.
Sadly, as any musician will tell you, even a great album is at the whim of poor marketing.
The band's label Enigma Records had distribution issues, which made Daydream Nation incredibly hard to get a hold of. This meant that the album only reached No. 99 on the UK album charts and failed to get on the American one at all.
Ah well, rock 'n' roll ain't about the money, man!
Unless you have any money that you don't need?
