10 Best Double Albums In Rock Music History

6. Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness - Smashing Pumpkins

Smashing Pumpkins may have been less funny than Sonic Youth in that Simpsons episode, but at least they can be content with their album being considered a much bigger deal.

In 1995, Billy Corgan et al. unleashed their third studio record unto the world and, to this day, it remains their most well-known. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness not only had a phenomenal name, but it was also crammed with fantastic songs that combined the overall angst of the time period with the band's fantastic ability as song crafters.

Bullet With Butterfly Wings and Tonight, Tonight were huge crossover hits and quite rightly so, but songs like Jellybean and Muzzle have also found favour amongst the group's hardcore fans.

In total, there's just over two hours of music on Mellon Collie, which is insane when you think that the band's previous album had only come out two years before.

The size and scale of this record definitely adds to its appeal, but it's the fact that all of the songs are good to great that really elevates the entire project.

You could say they... smashed it... sorry.
