10 Best Double Albums In Rock Music History
5. Exile On Main St. - The Rolling Stones
When a band records an album from a villa in France because they're hiding out from the government over tax issues, you know you're in for a good time.
This was the scene for The Rolling Stones in 1971, as they owed quite a fair bit in back payments. Rather than own up to the charges like adults, they decided to run away and make one of the greatest double albums of all time.
Exile on Main St. was a total mess in terms of organisation, as the band would often work long into the night to get stuff done. None of that matters though, as many consider this to be one of if not the best record the Stones ever made.
That's a fairly recent opinion though, as people hated it when it first came out. Maybe all the reviewers also worked for inland revenue.
A wild combination of traditional blues, more modern rock 'n' roll, country, gospel, and about everything else in between, Exile on Main St. proves that pure talent will always shine through.
Even if nobody had a clue what was going on the entire time.
