The second inclusion in this list of a bad ass woman from the legendary Runaways line up, Joan Jett is still one of the most celebrated, influential and all round successful guitarists still active in the world of rock and punk today.

Born in New York in 1958, Joan's mezzo-soprano vocal range has become almost as famous as her white Gibson Melody Maker, which she has used since all the way back with the Runaways in the '70s.

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts formed almost immediately after the breakup of the Runaways in 1979 and are easily worth their place amongst the greatest ever punk exports. With Joan at the very heart of the band's musical direction and acting as the literal poster girl for the group, the Blackhearts were instrumental in reviving the underground punk scene throughout the early 1980s.

I Love Rock 'n' Roll became one of the most acclaimed songs and albums of the decade, the band began touring with the likes of The Police, Aerosmith and Queen and even snagged the first ever performance at Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on Broadway.

To this day, Jett remains the Godmother of Punk.
