10 Best Frontmen In Alternative Rock

4. Anthony Kiedis - Red Hot Chili Peppers

Sonically the Red Hot Chili Peppers have come on quite a journey since the formation in the early '80s. Coming up on the LA alternative scene, their early sound was defined by funked-out bass lines, played with the ferocity of punk, and a raucous, unfiltered energy.

Over the years, their sound has matured; the lyrical themes have become more refined and the music has become more melodic. From rap rock, to funk metal, alternative rock and arena worthy anthems, they've moved through a number of sonic spaces. But a constant has been their enthusiasm for music, embodied perfectly by their energetic frontman, Anthony Kiedis.

From the early days, Kiedis' lyrics were often cryptic and bizarre amalgamation of rap verses, and macho chanting. His early sexual showboating was blatant; his unfiltered male bravado was at the forefront, and his lust for life was obvious. But there has always been a duality to the man. His appreciation for love and life has been intrinsically tied up with his struggles with addiction. Over the years, the youthful arrogance has given way to a more reflective tenderness. In part, this is what gives the Chili Peppers their allure.

Now, it's no secret Kiedis doesn't have the strongest voice, particuarlaly when live. But what he lacks in vocal ability, he more than makes up for in boisterous energy. For a guy about to turn 60 it's impressive he can still fling himself around stage with all the enthusiasm of his younger self.
