10 Best Frontmen In Alternative Rock
3. Thom Yorke - Radiohead
Thom Yorke is the outlier on this list. He doesn't have the same high energy as Anthony Kiedis; he doesn't rip the fretboard like Jack White, and lacks the charisma of Alex Turner. He is in reality, a somewhat subdued and even shy frontman. But, fronting a group as musically accomplished as Radiohead requires a different set of skills.
Yorke's willingness to push alternative rock in new directions might have polarised fans - with the release of OK Computer (1997) - but it was the kind of action needed to help evolve the genre. With Radiohead, he pioneered British alt rock during the early '90s, but then went on to explore more avant-garde and experimental sonic spaces, which revolutionised the relationship between electronic and rock music.
He might be a million miles away from the long haired, crotch thrusting frontmen of the '70s, or the bad boy indie rockers of the 2000s - but he represents the kind of musician, defined by artist accomplishments, rather than an archetypical rock star image. This guy might not immediately spring to mind when you think 'great frontmen' but when you consider what he's done for modern music, you'd be hard pressed to find a frontman as influential.
