10 Best Grunge Guitar Solos

7. Feel the Pain - Dinosaur Jr.

Dinosaur Jr. has been a fairly interesting case study in the world of alternative music. While never really breaking big in their respective scene, what they lacked in star power they have made up for in the respect they have garnered from the alternative community, with fans in everyone from members of Nirvana to Black Flag's Henry Rollins. Feel the Pain might not have been the record that put them in the big leagues, but the outro solo is enough to put them among the greatest melody writers of all time.

Throughout most of the song, the guitar is very inviting, with everything sounding like music you would put on if you were just chilling out with a bunch of friends. Instead of delivering the killing blow in the chorus, this clean guitar comes out of nowhere in the final bit of the song to deliver some of the catchiest licks to come out of the decade.

Not really one to showboat, J Mascis's touch on the guitar feels so natural on this tune, as he pulls out unorthodox licks that only comes with being acquainted with your instrument for a long period of time. As opposed to the more manufactured sounds of the mainstream coming down the pipeline, this was a ray of sunshine breaking through the cracks of the grunge gloom.
