10 Best Hard Rock Albums Of The 90s
8. Superunknown - Soundgarden
There were few finer vocalists in the world, let alone in the 90's hard rock scene, than Chris Cornell and he showcases every bit of that enviable ability in Soundgarden's '94 effort Superunknown. The songs are perfectly crafted to suit Cornell's undeniable talent and manage to maintain an equal balance of heaviness and beauty at the same time.
Fell on Black Days or The Day I Tried to Live are both deeply personal songs about Cornell's own battles with depression and, especially after his tragic passing, you feel every bit of that agony within them. Spoonman showcases the band at their heavy, driving, Grungey best and allows the rest of the band to show that they are more than worthy of sharing the spotlight with Chris (A difficult proposition for any). Kim Thayil's riffs and guitar are too often an overlooked piece of Soundgarden's success and are on full show here.
Of course, the stand out track on the album goes to Black Hole Sun. A haunting song that propelled the band into mainstream success. The album as a whole remains as a testament to one of the finest vocalists in music. RIP Chris, no one sings like you anymore.
