Fierce and vicious are the two best words to describe High On Fire's album, Luminiferous. The band play with the same ferocity as a typical debut release but unbelievably this is the seventh studio release for the sludge metal titans. Their tight, interlocking musicianship is what keeps the explosiveness of 'The Black Plot' ticking over for its duration.

The drums gallop from the start, setting the pace for the sensational guitar work. Singer and guitarist Matt Pike barks like a possessed shaman, sending his fellows into a frenzied musical state, with hammering toms and low end bass work propelling the song forward until it finally runs itself into the ground.

This is the sound of a band who come so close to the fire that they are practically seared and 'The Black Plot' is the brainchild of this on-the-rails musical ethos.

The recurring stop-start moments help to highlight what great musicians each one of the three members are and vitally, how each instrument adds to the overall end product, creating a song that never lies down in defeat.

High On Fire have demonstrated what can be created in metal when they play to the genre's main strengths - pulverizing riffage and throat shredding vocal delivery. The Californian outfit provide it in spades.
