It has been almost five years since Israeli black metal sound-weavers Melechesh dropped The Epigenesis, and they return this year with the wonderful Enki retaining their special brand of music through the use of middle eastern instruments and mythology.

Album opener 'Tempest Temper Enlil Enraged' hits a particular peak for the desert thrashers in what can only be described as a magic carpet ride through ancient Egypt, albeit a scary one at that. Their favorite drum technique blast beat surfaces but not at the expense of the song, showing a band who have learned how and when to pull in the reigns when necessary. The guitars are of course expertly played with riffs changing and contorting at will, with a phenomenal attention to middle eastern musical scales in the process.

Their sound sets them apart but that's not all there is to them. Their adept songwriting skill also warrants a special mention. The way the song barrel's fourth, changing direction constantly without feeling like a different song is masterfully done. They stick to the core rhythm whilst tearing it to shreds at the same time, revealing new musical possibilities.

They are as much a progressive outfit as they are any other genre and the goliath 'Tempest Temper Enlil Enraged' is a perfect example of a band who are currently occupying their own musical orbit.
