10 Best IDLES Songs

6. Rottweiler

This song is angry and visceral; snarling like a dog would. The breed of dog and the word itself both have an implied back-meaning of aggressiveness, which dovetails well with the general feel of IDLES. Their musicality is of an aggressive nature but always as channeled aggression.

Here the aggression is channeled against the “vulture at my breakfast table”, which here is the tabloid media. Tabloids create insecurity and play against the fear of the general public, the metaphorical “rat in the cage”, which is an allusion to the methods used in Orwell’s 1984.

The song gives great pleasure to barking out the word Rottweiler, and finishes with short instructional outbursts which call for a change to ‘the system’ and for unity, which has long been the raison d’etre of IDLES.
