10 Best IDLES Songs
2. Colossus
This is typically their show opener and is the first track from JAAAOR. It builds up tempo throughout the song, from the slow, almost prowling, opening guitars to the rampant, unbridled energy by the end.
In some ways, this song acts as a bonus as it switches from the initial song into an almost completely disparate second section at the four-minute mark. The only way the songs are linked is through the retention of the percussions, which are played so quietly that if you are listening passively you wouldn’t hear it and the effect would be that song one ends before the coda-esque second section begins with a burst of pure passion. In the live environment this transition signals the beginning of a mosh-pit.
The second section is interesting in that it includes lyrics which namedrop wrestlers from the late 80s and early 90s including Stone Cold Steve Austin and Ted DiBiase. These cultural touchstones add a certain age to the band and fix them with a particular generation. Without a doubt a fantastic opening song to any album and the best way to start a gig.
