10 Best Live Versions Of Rock Music Classics

9. Californication - Red Hot Chili Peppers (2003)

There's a fairly strong chance that one could find a references to the Golden State in over 90% of this bands back catalogue. Anthony Kiedis seems to draw from just three sources of inspiration when writing lyrics: sex, drugs and California. But there's one song that stands out as explicitly referencing all three of these themes a multitude of times over. That song has become the bands go to crowd pleaser.

This was a performance that captured the essence of what makes the Chili Peppers so enjoyable. Flea and John Frusciante locked into the groove with just over a minute and half of improvised jamming. These are the moments Chilis fans live for, the level of musical interaction between these two is unprecedented. It's as much about how they play as what they're playing. On the surface this isn't a difficult piece of music in a technical sense, but to be able to improvise something so fully formed without a single slip up is damn impressive.

They then effortlessly slipped into one of the bands most defining ballads. It's pretty widely agreed that despite his stage presence, Anthony Keidis isn't the best when it comes to singing live. But in this case it didn't matter, not when he had 80,000 Irish fans helping him out.
