10 Best Metal Music Videos Of All Time
4. Tool - Schism
When you're talking about the best metal music videos, it's not so much about if Tool makes the list, but which video will. With Adam Jones's incredibly disturbing imagery and experience in editing, this list could have been populated by solely Tool videos without question. Out of all of them though, "Schism" stands out as something in a league of its own.
Taking the lyrical concept of the pieces of one's mind fitting together, the humanoid figures present in the video are set up in bits that are carefully put together. As the song plods along, the figures are placed in different positions as they remove a piece of their structure along the way. This may be seen as just general fixtures, but the way they work in conjunction with the song's message of separation is incredibly profound. The more that you find yourself with this person, the more parts of yourself will slip away.
Visually, this video may be a simple premise, but what Jones decided to do with the bare-bones foundation is something that cannot be matched. In making this video, Tool had made a work of art that is as cerebral as their own musical complexity.
