10 Best Music Videos Of 2016
1. David Bowie - Lazarus
It's hard to believe we're approaching one year since the death of music legend David Bowie, who tragically passed away on the tenth of January from cancer two days after his sixty-ninth birthday.
The music video for Lazarus was released three days before Bowie's death, the single taken from his final record Blackstar. The video - helmed by Swedish director Bo Johan Renck - is extremely striking. Much has been said about the nature of Blackstar and its commentary on Bowie's knowledge of his own mortality, and the video for Lazarus does a wonderfu job of representing this theme.
In the video, Bowie's bandaged character sings from a hospital bed while an eerie figure reaches from below, attemtping to grab him. The camera filming Bowie slowly rotates, ascending and descending just like Bowie himself. After that, we see Bowie dancing rigidly in one of his old costumes, interspersed with shots of him frantically scrawling down his final musings.
There's a melancholy desperation to the whole thing which is utterly beautiful, Bowie's final music video a stunning self-epitaph on the last months of his life.
