10 Best Music Videos Of 2016
7. Weezer - California Kids
The video for Weezer's California Kids is weird. Like, genuinely baffling. It's the rare example of a music video being so odd that it's actually pretty funny, rather than just cringe-worthy. The key is that Weezer knows just how weird they're being, and that self-awareness makes the video incredibly fun to watch.
California Kids is a single released off The White Album. Though it's the first track on the record, the video followed clips for singles L.A. Girlz and King Of The World, and it incorporates moments from those previous videos to surreal effect, as singer Rivers Cuomo reenacts scenes like stuffing his face full of cream-filled cannolis, running around the Los Angeles board walk dressed as a king while flipping people off and dancing with a bikini-clad woman.
The video ends with Rivers digging something up at the beach, only for it to be revealed that it's actually himself. The existence of two Rivers doesn't last long before one pops out of existence, leaving behind nothing but a pair of glasses. Oh, and the video is capped off by an appearance of the kids from the "Damn, Daniel" meme, one of whom states "Damn, Rivers. Back at it again with the Ray-Bans".
Yeah, I did say it was baffling.
