10 Best Music Videos Of 2016
3. Beyoncé - Hold Up
If you thought Kendrick Lamar's splicing of two clips into one video was impressive, wait until you hear about Beyonce's Hold Up. Hold Up is actually taken from a one-hour film that originally aired on HBO, a film that accompanied the release of Beyonce's most recent album Lemonade.
Shortly after the film dropped on HBO, Hold Up was released as its own music video, directed by the Swedish film-maker Jonas Akerlund, who is responsible for some of the most iconic modern music videos ever released, including Blink 182's I Miss You, Lady Gaga's Telephone and Madonna's Ray Of Light (oh, and he also did that super depressing Sigur Ros video from earlier on the list).
The video begins with a shot of Beyonce submerged in a room filled with water, while the singer quotes the poetry of Somali poet Warsan Shire. After that, the doors of the room burst open and drain the water, making way for Beyonce's grand exit. She then spends the rest of the video strolling down the street with a baseball bat smashing car windows and fire hyrdrants, laughing gleefully at the camera. What's not to love?
