10 Best Music Videos Of The 90s

9. Virtual Insanity - Jamiroquai

Released in 1997, this remains the most popular video released by Jamiroquai. It predominantly features lead singer Jay Kay in a white room, surrounded by walls that are largely unadorned. As the video proceeds, the furniture, the other items scattered about and Jay Kay himself all seem to move magically.

Directed by Johanathn Glazer, the video was something of a technical marvel. It is presented as one single shot production, while in fact it was composited with several takes. This allowed the furniture in the room to be changed from one scene to the next.

The magic of the moving furniture is actually in the walls - it is they that move, while both the furniture and Jay Kay remain (more or less) in place. In different shots, different pieces of furniture are attached to the walls, allowing them to 'move' as well.

The video was a huge success for the band, earning them several awards from MTV that year, including Breakthrough video and Video of the Year. An onstage performance attempted to replicate the video, aided by two moving platforms while Jay Kay danced between them.
