10 Best Progressive Rock Bands Of All Time

5. Tool

Of all the bands that we've seen thus far, most of them still belong firmly in the rock category. That's not to say that all progressive music has to stick exclusively to the soothing sounds of modern rock. Any progressive player would be itching for something more, and Tool gave us something mind melting with their brand of progressive metal.

If you were there at Tool's inception though, you wouldn't have guessed that they would eventually go on to make something like Schism, being more of an off the wall metal act. With each passing release though, the band seemed to grow up exponentially, bringing in more complex time signatures and managing to even get psychedelic on some of their later records like Lateralus and 10,000 Days. From the sounds of these songs, you almost get lulled into a bit of a trance when you're listening to them, almost like Maynard James Keenan is giving you a false sense of security before hitting you over the head.

And believe me, that's no easy feat to make a progressive song feel hypnotic, especially when you're tossing around time signatures left and right like on Lateralus, which is so mathematically thought out that it's practically its own Fibonacci sequence. Even if you fancy yourself more of a straight prog rock person, you haven't lived until you've heard a Danny Carey drum solo.
