10 Best Rock Album Closers Of The 2020s (So Far)

6. The Dying Light - Sam Fender (Seventeen Going Under)

UK indie heartthrob and one of the most Geordie men to have ever lived, Sam Fender has been doing very well for himself since his debut album, Hypersonic Missiles, got released in 2019.

As well as making everyone weak at the knees with his boyish good looks, Fender also tapped into a special combination of American heartland rock and typically British sensibilities. He sounds like if The Killers actually were from Britain, instead of just pretending to be.

His 2021 album, Seventeen Going Under, cemented his status as one of the country's biggest stars, and Fender chose to close out this career-definer with a self-reflective, soaring ballad.

The Dying Light muses on Fender's home town, the people from there, and how their lives turned out in spite of all their promise. It's a perfect snapshot of his music; wistful and melancholy over the top of crashing guitars, wrapping up a work about youth and upbringing in spectacular fashion.

A great closer should tie everything else on the album together and that's precisely what happens here. If you ever feel like going back to your home town, stick this on, and it will remind you why you left.
