10 Best Rock Bands From Ireland
1. Thin Lizzy
Some of Dublin’s most cherished sons, Thin Lizzy rode a wave of energetic rock through the ‘70s and early ‘80s. The hard drinking outfit led by Phil Lynott is best remembered today through a few era-defining rock and heavy metal singles, but the greatness of this band goes far beyond that.
Thin Lizzy’s first few albums were mostly straight ahead rock collections (though there are highlights like "Honesty Is No Excuse" from the self titled debut and the imperious “Little Girl In Bloom”). Things really get exciting during the mid period, peaking with their near-perfect record “Jailbreak”. It features some of their biggest hits, as well as their finest, the extraordinary “Cowboy Song”.
The back end of their careers saw them embrace metal more fully, which works or doesn’t depending on your tastes; the musicianship’s always great, though.
The band was briefly reformed in the wake of Lynott’s tragic death, but that was a mistake. While all the members played a part, attempting to replace a frontman of his sensational charisma was just not feasible.
