10 Best Rock Comeback Albums

8. Achtung Baby - U2

Sometimes it's not the comeback album that you really have to worry about...it's about measuring to what you already did. After the Joshua Tree left them looking like the almighty gods of rock, how the hell was U2 going to transition into the age of alt-rock without falling flat on their faces? Instead of just donning flannel shirts themselves, they leaned even further into the excessive image, and it actually worked.

For as much as Bono was portraying himself like a god among men in songs like The Fly, it was clear that the entire thing was becoming a satire of what rock stars should be. At the same time, Achtung Baby isn't just about taking the piss out of yourself for daring to be a rock star. No, this album has the potential to take your heart out of your chest and stomp it into pieces.

Outside of the usual U2 soundscapes, songs like Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses and One are some of the most raw-nerved songs in their catalog, which sound both depressed and a little bit jaded about the years of heartache that each of these men have gone through. It's not going to be easy moving to the next stage of your career, but we should all be thankful that U2 made it over the hump.
