10 Best Rock Comeback Albums
7. Death Magnetic - Metallica
If there was any album that should have been a career killer, chances are that it would have been St. Anger by Metallica. Though people were already a bit skeptical of what they were up to during the Load era, the flimsy snare sound and the therapeutic lyrics of their 2003 disaster left most fans wondering if the thrash band that they knew and loved were gone for good. Like all professional musicians though, Metallica managed to pick themselves up and start walking in the right direction again with Death Magnetic.
Aside from the production issues from the loudness wars, these are the kind of songs that St. Anger should have been. Although there are some blatant retreads of past glory, a little bit of nostalgia is exactly what the fans needed to make sure that the thrash band thy loved wasn't completely tapped out. There are even some songs that hold up as some of the best in their catalog, like the Day That Never Comes being up there with some of the greatest Metallica ballads.
There are also some songs like All Nightmare Long and Suicide and Redemption that offer a few more surprises that people even wanted, like James Hetfield taking solos and a singalong chorus that we hadn't seen since Enter Sandman. Metallica may have been dormant for a while, but the resurrection begins the minute you hit play on this record.
