10 Best Rock Music Album Covers Of The 1990s

5. In Utero - Nirvana

You were expecting Nevermind, weren't you?

Whilst it's true that the iconic picture from the front of Nirvana's second album has become one of the most recognisable music-related images of all time, there's one problem with it.

Come on, guys, there's a baby's wiener on it.

It's just a little uncomfortable staring at a toddler's wang in this day and age, especially after the baby in question tried to sue the band for the use of his image.

Luckily, the band have another stellar 90s cover that doesn't have a murky legal history attached to it.

For the follow-up to Nevermind, 1993's In Utero, Nirvana needed something special. Working with art director Robert Fisher, Kurt Cobain came up with an idea.

Using a Transparent Anatomical Manikin with angel wings placed either side, Cobain created a mesmirising image that captured the dichotomy of the human spirit.

On one level, man is mortal, just a sack of organs being piloted around by the brain. On another, they are divine, capable of heavenly things.

If it wasn't an album cover, In Utero's artwork should have been hung up in a gallery somewhere. It's that damn good.

Also, no one's ever sued over it.
