7. Meat Puppets II - Meat Puppets
With a name as disturbing as theirs, no one should be surprised to learn that Meat Puppets were not putting out bubblegum pop in the 1980s.
Instead, they made it their mission to produce music as intentionally unappealing as possible. Lead "singer" Curt Kirkwood's garbled vocals made it a mighty task to figure out what he was saying, as the rest of the band created a psychedelic cocktail of noise behind him.
It's not to everyone's taste, but those who like it absolutely love it.
One famous fan was none other that Kurt Cobain. In fact, Nirvana covered three songs from the Meat Puppets' second album, Meat Puppets II, during their legendary MTV Unplugged show; Plateau; Oh, Me; and Lake of Fire. Kirkwood and his brother Cris even joined them on stage as guest musicians.
Meat Puppets II is a fine example of experimental psych-punk that lasts just 29 minutes and seven seconds.
A reissue released in 1999 crammed the album full of B-sides and new tracks, taking its runtime up to a massive 48:01! That's not the Meat Puppet way!
