10 Best Rock Music Videos Of The 1990s

9. Criminal - Fiona Apple

The whole idea behind Fiona Apple's 1997 song Criminal is the young singer reclaiming her sexuality and her position as a woman.

Apple herself has said that the track is about "feeling bad for getting something so easily by using your sexuality", which, in all honesty, must be a pretty nice thing to get to feel bad about.

These themes of the sexualisation of women and their lack of agency in the matter are reflected in the music video for Criminal. In it, Apple appears in various stages of undress, writhing around on furniture as she sings about being a "bad girl."

She's also incredibly thin here; part of a trend that would become known as "heroin chic." Thank God that's largely a thing of the past now.

This video isn't particularly showy, nor does it demonstrate some gigantic leap forward in technology, but it is a very well-played exploration of certain expectations on female performers at the time.

Even at the age of 20, Fiona Apple still had more confidence and faith in her own ideas than most people will ever have in their entire lifetimes.
