10 Best Rock Music Videos Of The 2020s So Far

7. Midnight Sun - Kreator

Have you seen the 2019 folk horror film Midsommar?

Mille Petrozza, lead singer of German metal band Kreator, clearly has and he clearly liked it a lot.

The video for his band's 2022 song Midnight Sun takes heavy inspiration from the Ari Aster movie, setting its action in the brightly-lit countryside where everything is not as it seems.

To go over the events in the video would be to just recycle the key plot elements of Midsommar. Girl attends seemingly-harmless festival, girl gets taken in by demonic cult, girl ends up as ritual sacrifice.

Been there, done that, got the blood-soaked flower crown.

It's the way in which the production for Midnight Sun so lovingly recreates the feature that makes it so incredible. It toes the line perfectly between homage and rip-off, paying strong tribute to its inspiration whilst also bringing enough new to the table to make it unique.

It might have been a bit smarter to release this video a bit sooner - the film was three years old at this point - but look, we don't know what the state of DVD rentals is like in Germany.

Maybe Mille couldn't get hold of a copy.
