10 Best Rock Power Trios

8. ZZ Top

ZZ Top is a band that people seem to forget about over the years, with many just acknowledging them as the band with the two enormous beards up front. For those uninitiated, the importance of this little old band from Texas looms larger than you may realize.

Starting in the late 60's, the band got the ball rolling after guitarist Billy Gibbons dissolved his psychedelic band the Moving Sidewalks. When first starting out, the band's sound was always blues-based, but the trio put their own spin on the formula by taking the typical blues shuffle beat and injecting it with a nice helping of Texas boogie.

The swing that the band produced throughout their glory years is something that only comes from the masters of the craft. You can tell from one listen that these three have studied under the great records of Muddy Waters, BB King, and all of the other bluesmen that came before them and are making it work in a modern musical context.

Further down the road, the band found ways to incorporate new wave and synths into their music while still staying true to their bluesy foundation. The blues may seem passe at times, but ZZ Top is the band that prove the true blues sticks to you forever.
